Businesses Report a Rise in Mental Health Issues

According to a recent survey from Canada Life Group Insurance, (CLGI) depression, stress and anxiety are all on the rise. Over 50% of UK employees experience mental health issues
The figures generated by the survey were alarming, with CLGI reporting that over 57% of UK employees have suffered from mental health problems. Stress was the most common illness, affecting 43% of respondents. Depression was another key cause of concern, experienced by 26% of employees. As a result of mental health illnesses, over half of employees end up taking time off work. 14% were absent for over a month, while 5% needed at least six months leave.
The economic impact of mental health
For employers, mental health issues represent a huge loss in productivity. Three out of five employees assert that mental health issues have a negative effect on their performance. As well as a loss of productivity, mental health problems can also cause significant financial blows. Every year sick days cost UK businesses £29 billion, with absenteeism largely caused by mental health issues.

Encourage employees to talk about mental illness, as 20% of sufferers admit that they’re too embarrassed to take time off due to afflictions such as stress and depression.
