team devOcean - Rowing the Indian Ocean
by Steve - July Jul 6 14:50:55 BST 2007

Two amateur rowers are gearing up to become the first people from the Midlands/Warwickshire ever to cross the Indian Ocean in a seven metre rowing boat.

David Lynes, from Redditch and Steven Redgewell from Evesham, otherwise known as Team DevOcean, look set to cross 3,500 miles of inhospitable sea when they compete in the first ever race across the Indian Ocean.

The race, part of the series of three races organised by Woodvalue which saw James Cracknell and Ben Fogle cross the Atlantic in 2005, takes place in April 2009 and will see the pair row for up to 80 days from West Coast Australia to Mauritius.

Team DevOcean will have to battle shark invested seas in temperatures of around 30 degrees, rowing one hour on, one hour rest all day every day.

Website consultant David, 27, said it was his friend Steven, an IT consultant and seasoned amateur rower, who first had the idea of entering the race.

I became suspicious that Steve was up to something when he kept quizzing me about my fitness. I finally prized it out of him that he wanted me to enter a rowing race and then he dropped it in later that it was across the Indian Ocean. I immediately said yes as I love a challenge and as I haven't actually ever rowed in a race before its certainly going to be a big one!

We're just normal guys with normal jobs and normal families from normal towns. This will probably be the biggest thing we ever do in our lives.

We don't just plan on taking part in the race, we aim to win it and we also want to raise £300,000 for NCH the children's charity and Baraq Ministries so the next year and a half is going to be a campaign of extensive training and fundraising.

To kick start their efforts, Team DevOcean are holding a launch party at Brindley Place in Birmingham where visitors will get to see a life size replica of the boat and learn more about the huge challenge.

Email Spammers go Subliminal
by Steve - September Sep 13 9:09:52 BST 2006

Email Spammers are now turning to subliminal advertising techniques in an effort to manipulate internet users according to security company Pandalabs.

The firm says that it had detected a new type of email which offers users the opportunity to purchase stocks and shares, but also contains a rapidly-displayed sequence of images showing the word ‘Buy’.

Luis Corrons, director of PandaLabs, said: “This is the first time we have detected an internet threat that uses subliminal techniques.

“Although in this case the author cannot boast a fine-tuned technique, it is worrying to witness how cyber-criminals are trying to introduce new strategies to increase the effectiveness of their attacks. And, worse still, we can expect new and more sophisticated threats of this kind to appear.”

Subliminal advertising techniques have been used for a long time in all sorts of media although they are banned and frowned upon.

In this specific case, Pandalabs says the images appear on screen for a maximum of 40 milliseconds.

This development and move forward for email spammers means that we need to far more careful and is dangerous especially for younger users.

If you would like advice or help regarding spam email and want to stop them from appearing on your computer then please Contact Us. We have implemented a server side spam filtering solution that would help remove spam completely.

UK residents bank account details found in Lagos Nigeria
by Steve - August Aug 14 21:59:08 BST 2006

A BBC documentary tonight reported that bank accounts details of thousands of British citizens are being sold in Lagos, Nigeria. This sale of bank account details is fuelling the ID theft and scams from Nigeria in Africa.

According to the BBC, hard drives with private data on can be purchased for as little as £20 each and are easily purchased from the abudnant supply.

PC's sent to Nigeria arew being used to find bank account details whose hard rives have not been properly wiped and cleared. Nigerian fraudsters are able to search the hard drives for this type of information and use it to scam UK residents along with withdraw and access bank accounts.

Many of the hard drives found in Lagos are from the UK and have been sent from recycling centres over the UK, the programme claimed.

Computer users wanting to donate or give away their computers are advised to format all details or remove the drive before donating as just deleting the information is not enough.

Computers used in offices could end up in the same situation and customers data could be danger and could result in penalties under the data protection laws, the BBC warns.

If you are concerned about these dangers then please contact Unique IQ (0870 766 8446) and we will be able to advise you accordingly.

3 simple steps to increase the performance of your PC

Computers are supposed to make life easier but all too often you find yourself waiting for Windows to complete a task or getting frustrated because things aren’t working as they should. Wouldn’t life be easier if your PC danced to your tune? well, the good news is that you can.

There are lots of settings in Windows XP that can be altered to improve the way operating systems works, and generally make it easier to use. And the best news of all is that we are going to share a couple of these tips with you now, with step-by-step instructions to make things even clearer.

1. Goodbye to the paperclip and other animated guides
The animated helper in Microsoft Office can be useful but they can also be
annoying. To remove them, go to the Control Panel and double-click on Add or
Remove Programs. Click on Microsoft Office in the list and click on Change, then
Add or Remove Features and OK. Tick the box marked Choose advanced customisation
or applications, then click on Next. Check the box next to Office Shared
Features, then click on the disk icon next to Office Assistant and select Not
Available from the drop-down menu. Then click on Update and follow the prompts.

2. Change your Desktop wallpaper
To smarten up the Desktop, open the Display Control Panel in the main Control
Panel window and click on the Desktop tab. Choose from the list of wallpapers
displayed in the menu by clicking on one, or click on Browse to select your own
digital photograph from the computer’s hard disk. Then click on Apply and OK to
confirm your selection.

3. Get rid of pop-up messages when you’re browsing
Service Pack 2 for Windows XP adds a pop-up blocker to Internet Explorer. To
check it is on, go to Tools and click on Internet Options, then go to the
Privacy tab and make sure Block pop-ups is ticked. Click on Apply and OK to confirm.

Unique IQ - Firefox vs Internet Explorer
by David - November Nov 8 16:33:29 GMT 2005

Firefox vs Internet Explorer

Download Firefox

Security can be a major factor in choosing an Internet browser. Spyware, adware, viruses and pop-ups are just a few of the nuisances that will keep you from browsing quickly, easily or at all. Microsofts Internet Explorer is notorious for being the browser with the biggest target for these types of problems.

Firefox has recently become one of the most downloaded browsers with over 100 million downloads in recent months.

To give you an idea of just how popular Firefox has become, between Feb. 2004 and the end of April 2005, Firefox went from virtually no downloads to 50 million downloads.

Many people have moved over to Firefox due to the increased security issues arising with Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. It not just home users but large companies and organisations have moved to Firefox including IBM who endorse and encourage all staff to use it.
